The Nature Conservancy of Canada

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is Canada's leading national land conservation organization. We are a private, non-profit group that partners with corporate and individual landowners to achieve the direct protection of our most important natural treasures through property securement (donation, purchase, conservation agreement and the relinquishment of other legal interests in land) and long-term stewardship of our portfolio of properties.

Since 1962, NCC and our partners have helped to conserve more than 2 million acres (over 800,000 hectares) of ecologically significant land nationwide.

The Islands Trust Fund

Established in 1990 by the Islands Trust Act of British Columbia, the Islands Trust Fund acts as a regional conservation land trust for the Islands Trust Area. This legislation recognizes the ecological significance and sensitivity of the Islands Trust Area and authorizes the Islands Trust Fund to acquire land for the purpose of carrying out the object of the trust.

The vision of the Islands Trust Fund is to create a legacy of special places in the Islands Trust Area, protecting both natural and cultural features forever. Fragile ecosystems on these islands are at risk due to population growth and escalating development. To direct our efforts to the ecosystems most in need of protection we have created a Regional Conservation Plan that identifies priority areas for conservation. The plan will guide the policy-setting, decision-making and work programs of the Trust Fund Board until 2010.

The Nature Trust

The Nature Trust of British Columbia has been a leading land conservation organization headquartered in BC since 1971. We acquire land through purchase, donation, covenant and lease. Then we care for this land in order to protect the natural diversity of wildlife and plants and their critical habitats. We are a non-profit, non-advocacy group that seeks a balance between sustaining our environment and sustaining our economy.

Our success can be attributed in large measure to our partnerships. Since 1971, The Nature Trust along with our partners has invested more than $68 million to secure over 61,000 hectares (150,000 acres)

Government of British Columbia

The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Forest and Range are involved with the plan.

Parks Canada - Gulf Islands National Park Reserve

Established in 2003, Gulf Islands National Park Reserve safeguards a portion of British Columbia’s beautiful southern Gulf Islands archipelago. These islands are representative of the Strait of Georgia Lowlands, one of the most ecologically at risk natural regions in southern Canada. This small park reserve includes thirty-five square kilometres of land and intertidal area on fifteen islands, numerous islets and reefs, and approximately twenty-six square kilometres of marine areas which provide valuable habitat for seals and nesting shorebirds.
